Julia Converse Sober

Julia Converse Sober has enjoyed creating beads, finished jewelry, and other objects from polymer clay since 1991. She currently teaches a variety of polymer clay workshops for local guilds and national events. Her work and instructional articles have appeared in magazines and books on the subject. A member of the Chicago Area Polymer Clay Guild since 1998, she has served in officer capacity since 2001.

Faux Enamel Transfer Pendant

Reproduce the vivid color and luminescence of enamel on textured metal using colored pencils and liquid polymer medium. Hand-color images, transfer with liquid polymer, and finish with metal leaf for maximum brilliance. Learn ways to create contrast and crop designs effectively as well as techniques for creating clear transfers without air bubbles. Fashion the finished transfers into a pendant with a play of light and dazzling color that rivals enamel.

Supply List: Basic kit, black clay, liquid clay, colored pencils (Crayola brand preferred), thick white glue, metal leaf, comb, waxed paper, 5x7 picture frame glass, 400 & 600 grit sandpaper, Optional: pliers, wire, cutter

Discover new possibilities for using pattern, texture, and contrast in your polymer clay work. Linoleum carving tools traditionally used in printmaking work beautifully with polymer clay, with easy cutting and sharp line quality in finished designs. Techniques will be demonstrated for carving 2-dimensional flat texture plates, carving and backfilling 3-dimensional bead forms, and creating small prints made from hand-carved print blocks.
